Dionne Smith Coker-Appiah, Ph.D., MAEd, NCC 

Dr. Coker-Appiah is a licensed psychologist in the state of Maryland and North Carolina. Clinically, Dr. Coker-Appiah provides culturally relevant services to adolescents (ages 13-18) and adults in individual, group, couples and family therapy. Her area of expertise is adolescent health, with a particular focus on working with adolescents who experience conflict in their dating relationships. Dr. Coker-Appiah also specializes in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, relational problems (partner, marital, and family), intimate partner violence/abuse, child/adolescent exposure to intimate partner violence/abuse, and adjustment disorders. She received her doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, her Master’s degree from Wake Forest University and her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia. Upon completion of her doctorate, she completed postdoctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2008, she joined the faculty at Georgetown University School of Medicine in the department of Psychiatry.

 

 

In addition to clinical work, Dr. Coker-Appiah is also engaged in an active community-based research program that primarily focuses on racially/ethnically diverse individuals and communities. Her research program focuses on adolescent dating violence prevention, adolescent mental health, and adolescent sexual health. Dr. Coker-Appiah has received both federal and foundation funding to support her research program. She continues to publish and present her research at local, national, and international conferences. She remains active in her field, holds several professional leadership and editorial positions, provides consultation services, and volunteers with various community-based organizations.
